Media Release - Bluewater Author Event
Fort Lauderdale, FL – The Marine Industry generates more income for the State of Florida than the
Super Bowl, the Citrus Industry, and the Cruise Line Industry, and yet, many of the luxury yachts
that visit or stay in South Florida are experiencing a shortage of qualified crew. Local author Julie
Perry will be speaking on January 18th, 2007, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at
Bluewater Books & Charts
in Fort Lauderdale to educate potential crew of the benefits to working on yachts. Perry's new book,
The Insiders' Guide to Becoming a Yacht Stewardess: Confessions from My Years Afloat with the Rich and
Famous
(Morgan James Publishing, Oct. 2006), addresses the steps that people interested in a
career in the marine industry need to take to become yacht crewmembers.

"With the recent boom in new yacht builds over the last two to three years—with even more new
yachts on order in shipyards around the world than ever before—the entire marine industry stands
to suffer in the coming years as the lack of trained and qualified crew leads to disgruntled owners
and guests," says Perry, who runs the website
www.WorkOnAYacht.com. In an industry with an
$18.4 billion statewide impact, the lack of a workforce is a serious problem.

According to
ShowBoats International magazine, a Fort Lauderdale-based yachting publication, in
2006, there were 17.9 miles of new mega yachts (yachts over 80 feet or 24 meters) under
construction in 25 different countries throughout the world. It is estimated that 6,900 new crew will
be required to fill the positions aboard these boats throughout 2007. Positions are available for
Deckhands, Steward/esses, Bosuns, Mates, Engineers, Captains, and Chefs.

"Professionally trained yacht crew are more in demand than ever," says Perry. "This isn't because it's
not an amazing job, but rather, people just don't know the job exists." She adds, "Our goal with this
event is to educate the public on the benefits of working in this industry, and the ways to get
started. For those already living in Broward and surrounding counties, the opportunities are
tremendous."

Thursday's free event at Bluewater Books & Charts is centered around Perry's book, only it is more
than just an author talk and book signing. As Perry explains, "It will serve more like a mini career
fair." Representatives from 15 various crew recruitment agencies and training schools will be on-
hand to speak to attendees. Perry will deliver a presentation discussing career options working
aboard luxury yachts and free copies of the new interactive DVD,
Navigate Your Career: Charting a
Course in the Marine Industry
, will be available from the Marine Industries Association of South Florida.

Yachting businesses that will be in attendance on Thursday to distribute information and answer
yacht crew-related questions include:
Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) – Trade Association
Fraser Yachts Worldwide/The Crew Network – Crew Recruitment and Placement
American Yacht Institute – Steward/ess Training

"Many people don't realize that they already possess skills that are essential to working on a yacht,"
Perry says. "Anyone trained in hospitality, auto mechanics, massage, culinary arts, or a number of
other things could easily make the transition to a career in yachting." She points out that most jobs
in yachting offer competitive salaries and benefits like housing, while also giving employees a chance
to travel the world, save some money (in most yacht jobs, you have little to no living expenses), and
build skills that will help in future land-based careers.

Perry's presentation and book signing will be accompanied by a wine and cheese reception. Anyone
interested in a career crewing aboard a yacht, or in just learning what opportunities exist in the
South Florida Marine Industry—whether aboard yachts or land-based—is welcomed to attend.
