|Bluewater Crew Training USA, formerly known as International Crew Training (ICT)|
750 W. Sunrise Blvd.
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311
Tel: 1-954-779-7764 (Contact Amilee Luke)
Email: [email protected]
|International Crew Training (ICT) has teamed up with Bluewater Yachting to create the largest and most comprehensive global yacht crew training and placement organization. Now known as Bluewater Crew Training USA, you will find the same personnel, same attention to customer service, same prices. Like a university with three campuses, Fort Lauderdale, Palma and Antibes, crew will be able to train at any of the locations. And all three locations will honor Bluewater ONE Account training vouchers. The best of all the training materials from each location have been unified into a single reference library so the crew will work from a single set of notes no matter which Bluewater location they find themselves.
As the first authorized PYA GUEST training center in the world, Bluewater Crew Training USA offers all of the courses required for the PYA GUEST Introduction level certificate, including: PYA Yacht Interior Introduction, PYA Wine & Cocktail Introduction, and PYA Yacht Interior Basic Food Service (Silver Service). Combine those with the Food Service, Safety, and Hygiene course, your STCW BST course, and an ENG1 Medical Exam, and you will qualify to earn your PYA Yacht Junior Steward/ess Certificate of Competence.
Bluewater Crew Training USA is the only yacht interior training facility that is also an authorized center for the Domestic Estate Managers Association (DEMA), so they can easily help you make the transition between interior yacht management and estate home management, and vice versa.
At various times in the year, Bluewater Crew Training USA offers specials where you can save money by completing all of these courses in combination with the STCW modules. They refer to this package as the STCW plus GUEST I Entry Program. Other course packages are also available, so be sure to contact them at [email protected].
|Savvy Maritime Academy|
1885 W State Rd 84, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315
Email: [email protected]
|Newly launched in January of 2022 (read Dockwalk article here), Savvy Maritime Academy is out to raise the standards of entry-level yacht crew training with their focus on practical, hands-on training that takes place in their 10,000-square-foot facility in Fort Lauderdale. The school's founder, Captain Brian Muston, has been in the yachting industry for 30 years, and the academy's staff of four have a combined total of 73 years of experience working on large yachts.
Savvy Maritime Academy's 10-day Interior Crew Training Course goes well beyond the basics that are covered in most entry-level courses. The packed curriculum covers the Roles and Duties of a Yacht Steward/ess; Guest Service (including Table Setting, Napkin Folding, and Silver Service); Wines, Cocktail Making, and Bartending; Coffee and Tea, Cheese and Caviar, and Cigar Service; Flower Arranging; Food Safety; Housekeeping, Cleaning & Laundry; Nautical Terminology; and Getting Hired.
But that's not all! Beyond the core steward/ess curriculum, interior-training enrollees gain exposure to deck skills that will come in very handy when joining a yacht, including hands-on training in basic knot tying, line and fender handling, and docking training. Similar to Savvy Maritime's Deckhand Academy, the first five sections of the Interior Training cover subjects that include an Introduction to the Yachting World, Certificates and Contracts, Habitation, Social Understanding and Awareness, and Mental, Emotional, and Financial Preparedness.
Overall, the 10-day training aims to provide a solid foundation for working aboard a yacht, teaching students how to live, work, behave, and do the physical work to enter the industry properly. Graduates will gain the confidence that they are ready to bring real value to their desired position and vessel.
|American Yacht Institute Classes (also offers Advanced Courses)|
Fort Lauderdale, FL
|American Yacht Institute (AYI) holds classes at various locations in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but primarily at Roscioli Yachting Center and Bradford Marine. AYI further holds custom and private classes aboard yachts and at estates.
AYI has a few popular programs. There’s a five-day Super Yacht Crew Course, a three-day Silver Service Course, and a two-day class, aptly named the Two-Day Stew. The latter is particularly ideal for newcomers to the industry, to see if you’re truly up to making it your career. As owner Kristen Cavallini-Soothill puts it, “If they find out they don’t like living and working aboard, they haven’t spent a small fortune on days and days of schooling…and they can still use their skills elsewhere.”
The Two-Day Stew Course covers one day of Silver Service (Russian, French, and Plate) and one day of Interior (Fine Detailing, Valet, Laundry & Guest Services). The three-day course covers the same but also includes a day of Basic Bar, Champagne & Wine Service, and Flowers. The five-day Super Yacht Crew Course includes the following modules: Introduction to Yachts, Crewing & Etiquette; Basic Seamanship; Silver Service; Interior (Fine Detailing, Guest Services & Laundry); and Basic Bar, Champagne & Wine Service, Flowers. Finally, AYI also offers a Professional Deckhand Course for exterior crew (or those interested in deck-stew positions), as well as Chief Stewardess MGT I and MGT II ADV Certifications (by appointment with a professional butler).
